"Sea Glass Hunt"

There will be a children's hike with Emory Davis on Saturday, July 7, meeting at 10 AM at the entrance to the Alpine Boat Basin & Picnic Area (PIP Exit 2). This is an approx. 1 mi. round-trip hike in 2 hrs. over easy trails. Participants will stop to explore a riverfront beach area and to collect sea glass and other beach-combing treasure at the half-way point of the hike. There is no admission fee for the program, which is open to all with no advance registration required, but a $5 parking fee is charged at the Alpine area. The hike will be held "drizzle or shine"; a rain date is set for Sunday, July 8 (also at 10 AM). If weather conditions seem questionable, hikers should call 201 768-1360 ext. 108 on the morning of the hike to confirm.

There will be a fishing contest and other activities sponsored by the Hudson River Fishermen's Association on Sunday, May 6, from 8 AM to 3 PM at the Ross Dock Picnic Area in Fort Lee (accessible from the park's southern entrance at the Edgewater-Fort Lee border). Runner goes the distance to raise funds for Long Path

Here's one extraordinary thing about David O'Neill: He recently ran about 22 miles along the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County.

Here's another: He calls that an easy day.

Over 12 days, five hours and 17 minutes, O'Neill ran from the George Washington Bridge in Fort Lee, N.J., to John Boyd Thatcher Park, just outside Albany. That's 370 miles — the entire length of the Long Path.

He averaged 30 miles a day. A marathon is 26 miles.

"ALPINE -- The faded daggers tattooed on Capt. Charlie Yannetti's arms poke out from under his shirt-sleeves. His hair looks more suited for Kenny Rogers than an appearance at a courthouse.

The third-generation Italian with pierced ears doesn't look like a cop and, in many ways, he's not -- he's part concierge, part counselor and part confidant for many of Alpine's residents.

After 30 years, Yannetti's last day was Monday, which officials named in his honor.

"We all love him," Alpine resident Julia Makris said, after she hugged the captain goodbye at a party held in his honor at Borough Hall. "He cares about people, and we'll miss him." More...

"Hooked on the Hudson 2006"

The 21st annual "Hooked on the Hudson" event will be held on Sunday, May 7, at the Ross Dock Picnic Area on the Hudson in Fort Lee (access is from the Park's south gate at the Fort Lee-Edgewater border, or from PIP Exit 1 in Englewood Cliffs). From 8 AM - 2 PM, the Hudson River Fishermen's Association will run a fishing contest for all ages (bait and instruction provided). Beginning around noon, the Hudson River Foundation will have a shad bake, with free samples available at 2 PM. Throughout the day there will be various displays, activities, and exhibits, as well as musical entertainment. All events are free; a $5/car parking fee will be in effect. All welcome.

Thomas W. Lamont (1870-1948) has been described by historians as the
"most powerful man on Wall Street" in the 1920s and 1930s, but that is
certainly not all there is to his impressive life story. Yes, at the
time of his death, Lamont was a Chairman of J.P. Morgan & Co. (where
he
had been a partner and top leader for decades) but he was also a great
philanthropist. And it is for good reason he was called the
"Ambassador from Wall Street." As Time magazine said in his obituary
"Lamont . . . made a pile of money . . . gave piles of it away (and)
epitomized the U.S. ideal of the public spirited tycoon." This talk
will focus on Lamont's family, extraordinary business and
international
diplomacy activities, and family homes in New York City and Palisades
New York. His relationship to Charles Lindbergh and the "Lindbergh
Baby
" kidnapping will be described, as will the founding of the Lamont
Geological Observatory in 1949.

"Harvest of Fall Fun"

Due to bad weather this past Sat., we have rescheduled a slightly scaled-back version of our "Harvest of Fall Fun" program for children of all ages to Sunday, October 30, from 2 - 4 PM at the Kearney House at the Alpine Boat Basin & Picnic Area (PIP Exit 2). The program will feature games and activities, as well as cooking demonstrations by Bobcat Saunders. The program, to be held "drizzle or shine," is open to all, with a $1 per participant donation requested.

(Reminder: Daylight Saving Time ends Oct. 30 - clocks are set back one hour.)

Have you sailed on the Hudson River before? Here's your chance! SEAS (Society for the Education of American Sailors) is now offering sailing lessons on the Hudson River! SEAS is a not-for-profit organization based in Westchester, NY. They offer low cost sailing lessons to the public. On the water lessons will be held at the Kings Point Park in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Service at The Alpine Community Church, Closter Dock Road on June 6th at 10am. Bring your pet! Its FLEET WEEK in New York City! This is your chance to see some of our Navy's finest ships and aircraft up close and to watch them in action as they conduct naval demonstrations in the waters around NYC.

It all kicks off on Wednesday, May 26th with THE PARADE OF SHIPS up the Hudson River from 9am to 1pm.

Every Spring, thousands of Shad swim up the Hudson River for their annual spawning run. They travel up stream as far North as Troy, NY to lay their eggs before returning back down the River to their home in the Atlantic Ocean.

To celebrate this large Herring's arrival, towns up and down the Hudson organize "Shad Festivals" where you can learn more about this prized commodity, try your hand at catching one (with the help of some local fishermen), and, of course, sample this tasty fish cooked in a variety of ways over an open fire. (Because Shad do not feed while swimming up the Hudson, they do not ingest any harmful PCB's that may be present in the water. In fact, Shad are one of the healthiest fish you can eat.)

So, come celebrate the Shad! at the 19th Annual "Hooked on the Hudson Festival" at Ross Dock, Englewood on Sunday May 23.

Welcome to the Alpine Historical Society! The AHS is currently in a period of reorganization. We are now working on a bold plan for the AHS, one that offers an exciting vision for the future while at the same time providing a clear window on our town's past. Our basic goal is to collect, archive, preserve, and share Alpine, New Jersey's eventful history with the local community. We believe Alpine's unique landscape, strategic location, and exciting history make it deserving of the title: "Crossroads of History."
